Just wondering what some of you do to get ready for school?

What if you have a tendency to isolate? Do you force yourself to be out and about?

I am always fighting the urge to isolate myself, yet I am more than happy to engage in class discussions. It's a weird dynamic that I am trying to figure out. -_-

will bittermelon make my curry bitter?

  • Aug. 21st, 2008 at 8:23 PM
I bought some bittermelon at the farmers market this week out of sheer nostalgia; I hated the stuff when I was a kid. I had some vague idea of putting it in my (Thai green) curry, until my friend pointed out that it might make the entire curry bitter, which would be. . . bad.

Will the bittermelon make my entire curry bitter? I can leave it out; I have plenty of other stuff to go in the curry, and I can always try stuffing the bittermelon with ground meat (like bell peppers), which is the way I used to have it when I was a kid.

Guy #1: Oh, look at this statue of the fat guy with the belly!
Guy #2: Yeah, it's cool.
Guy #1: There's a whole bunch of them! He must be some kind of symbol or something.

264: My Hood of Stars

  • Aug. 21st, 2008 at 10:00 PM
“My Hood of Stars”
Frank Gaspar

God was still walking around in the wilderness
fascinated and puzzled. He kept trying to show
me how to take the words from dreams and old
magazine covers, to make something out of them.
He was preoccupied for hours and hours, but
he never spoke his mind plainly. He did not
like people to feel too comfortable around him.
He was far more troubled than anyone now wants
to remember. This is when the world was
mostly without form, but it wasn't void: it is
just that everything made only one kind of sense.
You didn't have good words like automobile or deduction,
though you had rebuke and anoint. Then God
bent down and picked up a handful of desert.
Not really. It's just how we talk about such things.
He picked up a handful of desert and there came
a great tempest. Then there were worlds standing in line,
waiting on street corners and in train stations. Then
God went a great way into that wilderness, whistling
and singing in bright garments. I watched him go.
Everybody did. Then his stars fell around us like swallows,
stricken and stunned: That’s when the people began scooping
them into their pockets and purses, trying on names, in-
venting excuses. That’s when I tried on my own garment,
drunk on fear and craving. That’s how I began whistling and singing.

3 ferrets need a new home soon!

  • Aug. 21st, 2008 at 9:52 PM
Hey folks! My daughter and son-in-law are moving back to Dayton this weekend. Actually they are going to be living in Troy for about a month first. They are going to be living at my s-i-l's parents. Only thing is- his parents want nothing to do with their ferrets.

My daughter wants me to take them until she can adopt them out but....
I'm not really sure I know how to deal with them. I'm going to try but I'm not so confident about how it's going to work out. If it's going to work out at all.

So PLEASE! If you know anyone who'd like to take them.......
I think she'd prefer if they stayed together but I'm not sure about that yet.

Ask around if you don't know anyone then ask others to ask around, etc.

Many Thanks

What to do with chicken??

  • Aug. 21st, 2008 at 9:20 PM
Sooo  I had two full bags of boneless skinless chicken breasts in the freezer that should have lasted us several months..

I asked the boy to take out two breast for dinner tonight ..which he did. Only he forgot to to put the bags back in the freezer and I now have a very large amount of thawed out chicken breasts.. I know it's not a good idea to refreeze so how long do I have before they go bad, and what the heck can I do with them? I work 10-12 hour days so I don't have a lot of time to work with here.. Please please help me out I am freaking out because we cannot afford to waste that much food!

Girl #1 to girl #2: You are like, the epitome of a Connecticut girl.
Queer friend: Yeah, you really are.
Girl #1: I mean, how many pairs of Uggs do you own?
Girl #2: (flicks her hair behind her shoulder, embarrassed) I don't know.
(general chuckling)
Queer friend, laughing
: Don't worry, hon, I have two!

Cooking protocol

  • Aug. 21st, 2008 at 9:02 PM
So this isn't about a recipe or anything. This is about matters of etiquette or common decency. I think it is still on topic.

When you cook something for someone, do you want brutal honesty or do you prefer polite gratitude? Or something in between (like a combination of the two? "Thanks so much for making dinner! Hmmm, I wonder how this would taste with more pepper? Or something spicier?")

When someone cooks something for you, do you always answer honestly or do you sugar coat it to spare feelings/show gratitude, etc?

help :(

  • Aug. 21st, 2008 at 5:58 PM
Usually when I have some Kielbasa, I just cut it up and sautee it with some onions and peppers, and then serve it over rice.  It's tasty... but it's what I always do with Kielbasa.  I'm bored with it.

Do you know of anything else I can do with it?  I'd rather quick and easy recipes (don't we all!), but I'm willing to look at others too.  Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Consualia (Consuales Ludi) was a Roman festival celebrating the end of the harvest. The Romans honored the god Consus with sacrifice and burnt offerings of first fruits, and horse...

This might be an old blog to others, but I just found it yesterday. It has some of the best and most diverse recipes I've seen of any of the gluten free blogs I read. So much useful information and so many ideas!

Husband with Crohns follow-up

  • Aug. 21st, 2008 at 4:03 PM
He saw the GI yesterday. It had been 13 years!

She reviewed his bloodwork and said his calcium and platelets were low. She agreed with the dietary changes he's made (no red meat, cola, fried foods, choc, only well cooked veg, little dairy & certain raw peeled veg). She said to increase his Salofalk to 3x/day and do more bloodwork on Monday, including a lactose intolerance test. If he's ok with dairy she wants him eating it again for the calcium. She wants him eating yogurt for the probiotics and to resume his multivite 1x/day and flax oil.

CT scan is getting scheduled in a few weeks and he has until January to get used to the idea of a colonoscopy. Welcome to provincial health care waiting lists, whee!

Right now, the biggest hurdle to overcome is the overwhelming fatigue he's experiencing.

I Am Tired Of Living On My Toilet.

  • Aug. 21st, 2008 at 4:55 PM
I am seeing a gastro on September 2nd. My internist suspects IBS or Celiac.

I feel bloated, swollen, and inflamed most of the time. And more than lately I've had to poop pretty much right after I eat anything.

Pasta, dairy (a little is OK) and corn will send me to diarrhea hell.

I am hoping it's not Celiac, because gluten is in everything. Yes I know there's gluten-free alternatives, but a lot of gluten-free bread is... eh. And I would miss pasta. But I wouldn't miss the pasta poop.
